National Security Adviser Mr. Qasim Al-Araji Meets in Moscow with the Secretary of the Russian National Security Council, Mr. Sergei Shoigu

National Security Adviser Mr. Qasim Al-Araji met today, Wednesday, in the Russian capital Moscow, with the Secretary of the Russian National Security Council, Mr. Sergei Shoigu.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Al-Araji conveyed the greetings of the Prime Minister, Mr. Ali Falih Al-Zaidi, to President Vladimir Putin. Discussions were also held on strengthening the relations of friendship and cooperation between Baghdad and Moscow in the field of counter-terrorism and the exchange of information and expertise.

The situation of ISIS terrorists who were transferred from Syria to Iraq was also discussed, including 147 members who claim to be of Russian nationality.

Mr. Al-Araji affirmed that Iraq is making efforts to reduce escalation in the Middle East region and appreciates the positions of the countries supporting the ending of wars and conflicts, foremost among them Russia.

For his part, Mr. Shoigu expressed Moscow’s aspiration and readiness to continue and strengthen cooperation with Iraq in a manner that serves the interests of the two countries and the two friendly peoples.

The meeting concluded with an emphasis on the importance of the Iraqi-Russian Joint Committee holding a new round of meetings to discuss a number of issues related to both sides and of mutual interest.
